2-Day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu: Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book the 2-Day Short Inca Trail?
We recommend booking as early as possible, ideally 8 months in advance and at least 4 to 6 months ahead during the high season (April to October). The Peruvian government strictly limits the number of people allowed on the Inca Trail: daily permits are issued to only 200 hikers, plus support staff and porters.
For this reason, we recommend booking your Short Inca Trail tour as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Which Machu Picchu circuits are included?
On Day 1, you enter via Inca Trail Route 5 (Wiñay Wayna - Inti Punku - panoramic viewpoint), which covers the panoramic sector of the citadel. On Day 2, the guided tour follows Circuit 3 - Route 3B, which explores the lower section of the citadel: agricultural terraces, urban sector, Temple of the Sun (exterior view), House of the Inca, Sacred Plaza, ceremonial fountains, and Temple of the Condor.
How long is the Machu Picchu tour on Day 2?
On Day 2, you will enjoy an unforgettable experience at Machu Picchu with your professional guide, who will lead you on a tour of approximately 2 to 3 hours, sharing the history, mysteries, and secrets of this Wonder of the World.
Can I bring luggage for Day 2?
Yes. You can bring up to 5 kg (11 lb) of luggage, which will be transported to Aguas Calientes. We will give you a duffel bag to pack the clothes and items you will need for your Machu Picchu visit the next day. This service must be requested at least 48 hours in advance.
What is the best time of year to hike the Short Inca Trail?
The climate in the Andes has two seasons: the dry season (April to October) and the rainy season (November to March). Keep in mind that, even during the rainy season, you may experience cloudy skies and hot weather on the same day. The Inca Trail is open from March 1 each year until the end of January. The busiest months are April through September. Machu Picchu is located in the high jungle, so its climate is warm and humid, with temperatures between 8 °C and 20 °C (46 °F and 68 °F). We recommend packing clothes for both cold and warm weather.
Is the 2-Day Short Inca Trail right for me?
The 2-Day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu follows one of the best-preserved sections of the original trail built by the Incas. Due to high demand and a limited number of permits, not every traveler is able to secure a spot for this unique experience.
This hike is ideal for couples, groups of friends, and families. No previous trekking experience or intense physical training is required; however, a basic level of fitness and being used to walking for several hours are recommended. You should also be able to move independently along the trail. We recommend spending at least one or two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the hike to acclimatize to the altitude.
What is the recommended age range for the Short Inca Trail?
The hike is recommended for children ages 8 and up, especially if they are used to walking and enjoy outdoor activities. There is no maximum age for adults; many older travelers successfully complete the Short Inca Trail. However, we recommend a medical checkup beforehand and travel insurance that covers hiking and medical emergencies. More than age, what matters most is being fit enough to walk for several hours at a comfortable pace.
At what age do children pay for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu?
Children pay a special rate from age 3. To fully enjoy the experience, we recommend the hike for children ages 8 and up, since the trails are steep and have many stone steps. If you are traveling with younger children, you can also book a private tour, which allows a more comfortable pace and more breaks.
Do Andean Community (CAN) citizens get a discount?
Citizens of Andean Community (CAN) countries do not receive a discount on the Inca Trail or Machu Picchu entrance. The CAN discount applies only to tours that do not include the Inca Trail.
How many people are in a group tour?
We believe the Inca Trail should be a unique and intimate experience, so we work with small groups of no more than 6 travelers. Departures are guaranteed with a minimum of 2 people. If no other travelers are booked on your date, your departure is still guaranteed: we never share or transfer groups to other agencies.
Why is the Inca Trail closed in February?
The Inca Trail is closed for the entire month of February for maintenance and conservation work, which also coincides with the rainiest time of the year. The trail officially reopens on March 1.
How many days before the hike should I arrive in Cusco to acclimatize?
To make the most of this Andean adventure and avoid altitude sickness, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days in advance. During that time, we can help you arrange acclimatization activities, such as a half-day Cusco city tour or a full-day Sacred Valley tour. If you are coming from another high-altitude area in Peru, 1 full day in Cusco will be enough.
Is travel insurance required?
For your peace of mind and safety, we recommend having travel insurance for any unexpected events. It can assist you in cases such as lost luggage, cancellations, strikes, natural disasters, or other unforeseen circumstances.
Is there phone signal or internet on the trail?
Phone signal is limited on some parts of the hike. However, our team carries a phone with coverage throughout the trek to handle any emergency. Important: there is no signal during the train ride.
Will I receive travel information before the trip?
One day before departure, you will receive a detailed briefing from your guide, either in a group or privately at your hotel.
Can I change my passport number after booking?
The government only allows passport number changes if we have a copy of both your new and old passports. If you no longer have your old passport, any government-issued ID will be accepted, as long as the name matches. Also, make sure your passport does not expire within six months of your trip or during your travels.
How do I get to Cusco?
Most travelers arrive in Cusco by plane. Please note that Cusco airport only handles domestic flights. If you are flying in from abroad via Lima, you must collect your luggage in Lima and check it in again for your flight to Cusco.
What are the starting and maximum altitudes of the hike?
The hike starts at Chachabamba, Km 104, at an altitude of 2,170 m (7,119 ft) above sea level, and climbs to 2,720 m (8,924 ft), the highest point of the trail.
How many hours and kilometers is the hike?
On Day 1, the hike covers approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) and takes 5 to 7 hours at a relaxed pace. This makes the 2-Day Short Inca Trail a more comfortable and easier alternative to the 4-Day Classic Inca Trail.
Is breakfast included before the hike?
No. We recommend requesting a box breakfast from your hotel or having breakfast in Ollantaytambo before boarding the train.
What clothing and gear do you recommend?
Comfortable, lightweight clothing suited to the Andean climate: trekking shoes with good support and grip, comfortable quick-dry hiking pants, waterproof clothing or a rain poncho, a small daypack of about 30 liters, a sun hat or cap, trekking poles, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, and a camera with a charged battery.
Do I need trekking poles?
Trekking poles are very useful and highly recommended for this hike. You will descend many stone steps carved by the Incas, and poles help relieve pressure on your knees while also providing support on the uphill sections. If you bring your own, make sure they have rubber tips; otherwise, park rangers will not allow you to use them. If you forget yours, you can rent them when booking the tour.
Are drones or GoPro cameras allowed?
Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail are protected by the Peruvian government and UNESCO, so drones are not allowed to be carried or flown. However, you can bring a GoPro or small cameras to capture the most beautiful moments of the Inca Trail.
How do strikes or road blockades affect the itinerary, and is there a contingency plan?
Occasionally, external factors such as strikes, protests, or road blockades may cause changes to itinerary schedules or services. Our operations team constantly monitors the situation to provide timely solutions and support throughout your trip. If an unexpected event occurs, we will arrange alternatives such as schedule adjustments, alternate routes, or rescheduling, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Culture. Please note that some external changes may result in unexpected additional costs, which is why we recommend travel insurance.
Can I spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes?
Of course. If you are happy to take the same train from Aguas Calientes included in your original itinerary, usually at 6:20 p.m., there is no extra charge for delaying your return train by one day. If you need us to book your hotel or an additional Machu Picchu visit, extra costs will apply. If you choose to spend an extra night in Aguas Calientes, please inform our office at least one month in advance so your train ticket is purchased for the correct date.
What happens if I feel unwell during the hike?
If a traveler experiences altitude sickness, exhaustion, or any other issue during the hike, the guide will quickly assess the situation and provide immediate assistance. Depending on the traveler's condition and location on the trail, we will arrange a return via the safest route or coordinate the necessary assistance with the relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Culture, SERNANP (Peru's National Protected Areas Service), and the Peruvian National Police (High Mountain Division).
How does the booking process work?
Step 1: Check availability. Email us at info@sakuraexpedition.com to check available dates. We will send you a personalized booking form that each member of your group must complete.
Step 2: Traveler details. To obtain the Short Inca Trail permits, we need the following details for each traveler, exactly as they appear on the passport: full name, gender, passport number, date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy), and nationality. Without this information, we cannot purchase permits or tickets.
Step 3: Deposit and confirmation. Once we receive the completed forms, we will request a deposit of USD 300.00 per person to purchase the permits. We recommend booking early, as spaces sell out quickly.
Step 4: Final confirmation. Once the permits are secured, you will receive your official confirmation invoice. At that point, your booking is 100% guaranteed.
Can I cancel and get my deposit refunded?
Unfortunately, no. Because the Inca Trail requires permits, entrance tickets, and train tickets to be purchased in advance, the deposit paid to confirm your booking is non-refundable and non-transferable. We recommend checking the specific cancellation terms with your sales advisor before making any changes.
Can I leave my luggage at your office?
Absolutely. During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Should I tip?
Tipping is a tradition on any hike to Machu Picchu. Although we pay fair wages to our entire team, any extra amount is always appreciated. Tipping is not mandatory, and you should never feel pressured to do so.
