You should be confident in your health, feel completely well, and feel capable of walking the world. For your safety, it is recommended that you have a medical check-up.
How long do I have to hike to Rainbow Mountain?
The hiking time depends on your physical condition. It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to get there and 3 hours to return.
How might the altitude affect me?
Rainbow Mountain is 5,200 meters high. If you are at altitude, you will feel the effects. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, insomnia, loss of appetite, and fatigue. To avoid altitude sickness, it is recommended that you consult your doctor beforehand.
What kind of clothes should I wear?
Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in and that you feel capable of walking a mile in. Loose or flexible pants, a warm but lightweight jacket, good hiking boots, and of course, a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
Can I hike on my own?
Absolutely. But there’s one thing to keep in mind: you can go on your own, but only if you are accustomed to long hikes. Additionally, we can guide you and put you in touch with local cooks.
What should I bring for the hike?
You’ll need to bring rubbing alcohol, coca tea, ti molina (a type of herbal tea), plenty of water, and a jacket. You only need to bring these items if you’re traveling independently, but the jacket is obviously necessary.
What should I bring for food?
Actually, you don’t need to worry about your food. The agency takes care of everything. That’s why we have a restaurant in the Cusipata area. The food we serve is very nutritious, based on typical Andean dishes. The meals are light and very nutritious, containing protein and vitamins—everything a traveler needs.
What’s the difference between these similar hikes (Rainbow Mountain, Palcoyo, and Pallay Punchu)?
The difference lies in the hiking distance, the altitude, and the bus ride.
To reach the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint, the hike takes approximately 1 hour, and the return trip takes 40 minutes. Located at 5200 meters above sea level.
To reach the Palcoyo viewpoint, the hike takes approximately 30 to 35 minutes, with a 25-minute return trip. This viewpoint is located at 4900 meters above sea level.
To reach the Pallay Punchu viewpoint, the hike takes 3 hours each way. This viewpoint is located at 4700 meters above sea level and features rock formations on vertical ledges.
