day 1
PUERTO MALDONADO - PUERTO CAPITANÍA - COCHA CAIMÁN
Welcome to the Peruvian Amazon, where every sound, landscape, and wildlife encounter becomes an unforgettable adventure!
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, Peru’s Biodiversity Capital, our team will meet you at the airport or bus terminal and take you to the Monte Amazónico office to complete the registration. Then, we will head to Capitanía Port, where we will board a boat for a ride of about one hour along the Madre de Dios River to our Amazon lodge.
Along the way, you will watch the city give way to the lush rainforest landscapes of Tambopata, surrounded by vegetation and extraordinary biodiversity. Upon arrival at the lodge, you will receive a warm welcome with a refreshing regional fruit juice and settle into your room. Then, we will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared with local ingredients.
In the afternoon, we will cross the Madre de Dios River to visit the fascinating Monkey Island, a natural area where we will have the chance to see different primate species, such as capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys, and discover the richness of Amazonian wildlife in its natural habitat.
As night falls, we will set off on an exciting excursion in search of white caimans on the Madre de Dios River. Using flashlights, we will explore the riverbanks and sandbars where these reptiles usually rest. We may also see capybaras, known as the world’s largest rodents. This nighttime experience will reveal another side of the wildlife of the Peruvian Amazon.
Finally, we will return to the lodge to enjoy dinner and rest surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. It will be the perfect end to our first day of adventure in Tambopata from Puerto Maldonado, as we prepare to keep exploring the extraordinary biodiversity of the Tambopata National Reserve.

day 2
BUNGALOWS - SANDOVAL LAKE - MONKEY ISLAND
Head into the heart of the Peruvian Amazon and discover the magic of Lake Sandoval, a biodiversity paradise in the Tambopata National Reserve!
After a delicious breakfast, one of the most memorable days begins: the visit to Lake Sandoval, the jewel of the Tambopata National Reserve. We will navigate upriver along the Madre de Dios to the reserve entrance, where we will head into the rainforest to begin a hike full of discoveries.
The trail to Lake Sandoval is lined with centuries-old trees, wild orchids, and colorful birds. Upon reaching the channel that connects to the lake, we will board a rowboat to glide across its calm waters. Lake Sandoval is home to giant otters, caimans, macaws, turtles, howler monkeys, and an incredible variety of Amazonian wildlife. With luck, we may spot the elusive giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), a symbol of Tambopata‘s wildlife.
After this experience, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a hearty lunch. In the afternoon, we can join an optional excursion to Monkey Island, near Lake Sandoval, where you can see species such as the spider monkey, capuchin, squirrel monkey, and pygmy marmoset. This protected area of Tambopata offers one of the most authentic encounters with Amazonian wildlife.
As evening falls, we will enjoy a spectacular sunset over Lake Sandoval, when the sky turns shades of orange and pink. Then, we will return to the lodge to share a delicious dinner and enjoy the nighttime calm of Tambopata.

day 3
BUNGALOWS - PUERTO MALDONADO
Say goodbye to the Peruvian Amazon from above and take in the incredible biodiversity of Tambopata!
At 5:30 a.m., we will start the morning with a walk along the Canopy Walkway, a system of platforms and suspension bridges more than 30 meters (98 ft) above the ground. From up high, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River and the lush rainforest of Tambopata. During this experience, we will have the chance to spot a variety of birds, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and oropendolas, as the jungle wakes up with its sounds and colors.
After this adventure in the heights, we will return to the lodge for breakfast. Then, we will head back to Puerto Maldonado, where we will transfer you to the airport or bus station, depending on your departure time.
This concludes our 3-day Tambopata tour, an unforgettable experience of nature, adventure, and discovery in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon.

What is the best month to travel to Puerto Maldonado?
If you would like to join Puerto Maldonado’s anniversary celebrations, consider traveling in July. But if you prefer to admire the beautiful vegetation of the Amazon rainforest, consider visiting during the wet months, when the forest bears fruit.
