Itinerary
Discover what awaits you in the SANDOVAL LAKE AND PARROT CLAY LICK TOUR – 3 DAYS
day 1
PUERTO MALDONADO - LODGE - MONKEY ISLAND
Upon our arrival in Puerto Maldonado, starting point of this incredible adventure in the Amazon rainforest, the staff will welcome us and transfer us to Puerto Capitanía to board towards the Madre de Dios River. After an hour of navigation, we will arrive at our ecological accommodation, surrounded by the lush jungle.
After the welcome and a refreshing tropical juice, we will settle into our rooms. In the afternoon we will visit Monkey Island, a natural space near Sandoval Lake, where various species of primates inhabit. During the tour, our guide will explain the relationship between the Monkey Island ecosystem and the species that live near the parrot clay lick, one of the most colorful spots in the Amazon.
At nightfall, we will enjoy a nocturnal boat excursion along the river, searching for white caimans, black caimans, and ronsocos better known as capybaras. From the boat, under the starry sky, we will be able to hear the sounds of the jungle and the routes leading to the clay lick, where parrots and macaws sleep.

day 2
LODGE - SANDOVAL LAKE - CANOPY WALKWAY
After breakfast, we begin a hike to the spectacular Sandoval Lake, one of the most visited destinations in the Tambopata Reserve. We will navigate in a rowboat through its calm waters, surrounded by palm trees and centuries-old trees. Sandoval Lake is home to giant otters, howler monkeys, piranhas, and a great variety of birds that also frequent the parrot clay lick.
During the navigation, the guide will explain how Sandoval Lake connects with the ecological systems where various clay licks are located, mineral-rich areas that daily attract flocks of parrots, macaws, and other Amazonian birds.
After the visit, we will return to the lodge for lunch and rest. In the afternoon we will take the walk along the Canopy Walkway, a suspension bridge more than 30 meters high, from where impressive views of Sandoval Lake and the surrounding jungle are obtained. From above, we will be able to observe part of the route to the parrot clay lick, where, at dawn, hundreds of multicolored birds gather.
At night, we will take a nocturnal walk to discover the jungle’s wildlife: bioluminescent insects, frogs, and mammals that inhabit the surroundings of our lodge.

day 3
PARROT CLAY LICK - PUERTO MALDONADO
Very early, before dawn, we will board the boat again to visit the fascinating parrot clay lick, a natural spectacle that no traveler should miss. At this point, known as Chuncho clay lick, we will observe dozens of parrots, macaws, and parakeets congregating to feed on the mineral-rich clay.
The sunrise over the parrot clay lick is a unique moment: the sun’s rays illuminate the macaws’ wings as they fly over the forest, offering an unforgettable chromatic spectacle. During the observation, the guide will tell us how the clay lick fulfills a vital function in the diet of Amazonian birds.
Then we will return to the lodge for breakfast and prepare for the return trip to Puerto Maldonado. Before departing, we will have one last panoramic view of the Amazonian landscapes, remembering the scenery, sounds, and experiences lived between the jungle, the clay lick, and the natural charm of the Peruvian Amazon.
