Itinerary
Discover what awaits you in the MACAW CLAY LICK TOUR – 2 DAYS
day 1
PUERTO MALDONADO - AMAZON LODGE
Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, our team will welcome you to begin the adventure towards the Tambopata River, gateway to the magical macaw clay lick. During the two-hour road journey, we prepare to enter the Amazon rainforest, home to the famous clay lick where macaws fill the sky with their colorful flight.
From the riverbank, we will take a tourist boat that will take us to our Amazon lodge, surrounded by nature and very close to one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity in the Amazon and the most important clay licks of Tambopata.
Upon arrival at the lodge, we will enjoy a welcome drink with local fruits and a delicious typical breakfast or lunch, depending on our arrival schedule. This experience marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey through the jungle and the fascinating macaw clay lick.
In the afternoon, we will take a guided walk through the tropical forest. With every step, biodiversity becomes present: amphibians, reptiles, mammals, insects, and birds will remind us that we are very close to the clay lick, a space where nature expresses itself with all its energy. This first encounter with the jungle is the perfect prelude to experiencing the magic of the El Chuncho macaw clay lick the next day.
At night, the murmur of the forest and the sounds of nocturnal animals that inhabit around the clay lick will accompany us as we rest in the middle of the jungle. A unique experience that only the Peruvian Amazon can offer.
day 2
LODGE - "EL CHUNCHO" MACAW CLAY LICK - PUERTO MALDONADO
Very early, around four in the morning, we will begin our journey to the spectacular El Chuncho macaw clay lick, the largest and most recognized clay lick in the world. We will navigate for an hour and a half along the Tambopata River, observing how the jungle awakens as we approach the impressive clay lick where hundreds of birds gather every dawn.
Upon arrival, we will position ourselves in front of the clay cliff to contemplate the incredible natural spectacle that the macaw clay lick offers. Dozens of species—macaws, parrots, and parakeets—fly overhead before descending in multicolored flocks to feed on the minerals of the clay lick. This phenomenon, typical of the El Chuncho macaw clay lick, is one of the greatest attractions of the Peruvian Amazon.
The sunrise over the clay lick tints the sky with shades of red, green, and blue, creating a unique landscape that will be engraved in the memory of every traveler. Without a doubt, visiting a macaw clay lick is an unmissable experience for nature and photography lovers.
After enjoying this spectacle at the clay lick, we will return to the lodge for an energetic breakfast and a brief rest. Later, we will visit the botanical garden to learn about the fruit, timber, and medicinal species that thrive thanks to the ecosystem surrounding the macaw clay lick and the tropical forest.
After lunch, we will board the boat again heading to Puerto Maldonado and conclude this unforgettable journey to the macaw clay lick, a natural jewel of Tambopata that reveals the living essence of the Peruvian Amazon.
